Kortni

“Oh my God,” the girl said.

She was losing it. Tears streamed down her face. Basically your average crazy fan. Only she seemed more crazy than usual.

There were always a few of them at these meet and greets. People who thought I was the biggest and best thing ever.

I liked fans like that. I was inclined to agree with their assessment of how wonderful I was.

The only problem was they were always major clingers. The kind who got a little too close for comfort. Normally that was enough to freak me out, but tonight I embraced it.

Literally. I reached out and pulled the blubbering girl into a hug. Her eyes went as wide as saucers. Like she couldn’t believe her good fortune. If she was a super fan like I thought she was then she knew I usually didn’t do more than a handshake, or maybe holding both of fan’s hands.

I wasn’t the fan hugging type. Except tonight it was all different.

Besides, the girl was pretty. Even if she was ugly crying. She was the kind of girl I wouldn’t mind inviting back to my tour bus for a little fun if something better didn’t come along. We’re talking maybe an LA 7, but a definite Boise 10.

No, scratch that. I wouldn’t have minded taking her back to my bus before. In the good old days when I didn’t have as many concerns.

Everything was different now. Now, tonight, I was trying to make one girl in particular jealous.

I looked across the room. Sure enough there was Charlotte. Staring with an impassive expression, but she was staring.

“I’m so happy to meet you,” I said. “What was your name again?”

The girl’s arms stayed locked around me. It was the kind of hug that was getting uncomfortable. Charlotte was staring a little more intently, but the problem was I couldn’t tell if that intent staring was because she was worried this girl was a little too crazy or if it was jealousy that I was getting so up close and personal with the girl in the first place.

“It’s Christine,” the girl said.

I blinked. “Excuse me?”

She finally pulled away. Wiped a tear from her eyes.

“My name. You asked my name. It’s Christine. Oh my God I can’t believe I’m actually standing here talking to Kortni!”

That last bit turned to a high-pitched squeal. The kind that would’ve ruptured my eardrums if I wasn’t already suffering from a little bit of post-concert hearing loss.

“Well you better believe it,” I said. “Come in for another hug Christine.”

Charlotte took a step forward. Oh yeah. I was getting a reaction out of her. It was nice to know I could break through that steely façade.

The only problem was, again, I was having trouble telling whether or not she was taking that step forward because she thought this girl was liable to pull out a knife, not likely considering everybody went through a metal detector several times before they got to this point, or if she was thinking about that kiss we’d shared on the yoga mats in my house a couple of weeks back.
